PROGRAM
OUTLINE (2 HOURS)
Students will become aware of the many colours present in the environment and
learn how these colours are used by nature.
INTRODUCTION: Puppet show- ½ Hour
Felix the Fox and Sally Skunk entertain the students with a lively discussion
about the importance of colours in nature.
COLOUR ACTIVITIES: 1 ½ Hours
There will be time to do at least four activities.
1. CAMOUFLAGE TRAIL- Students must try to locate wooden and
plastic animals hidden along a trail.
2. ARTIST’S PALETTE- Using glue, students attach TINY
pieces of vegetation, as manyn colours as possible to a paper cut-out palette.
3. COLOUR GRADING- Students choose a colour. They then
find six natural objects ( not to pick living ) such as leaves and arrange
in order from lightest to darkest.
4. MAGIC PAINT BRUSHES- Meet the painter who lives in
the forest. Using magic paint and paint brushes supplied by the painter,
students will reveil the many colours hidden in the natural canvas of
nature.
5. TOSS AND FIND- (chart and coordinates) Students work in pairs.
Each pair tosses a token onto a chart. The location of the token indicates
what the students must find i.e red maple leaf.
6. TUBE VIEW- (Focus on small things) Students use toilet
paper rools to view small objects and colour variety.
7. THE UNDERWORLD- Students discover the many colours
often overlooked underneath plants, logs, etc. using special Underworld
mirrors.
8. RAINBOW CHIPS- Students use coloured rainbow chips to find and
match similar colours in nature.
PREVISIT PREPARATION
Students should be familiar with:
· CAMOUFLAGE: The ability of an animate or inanimate
object to blend in with its surroundings.
· Animals use colours for camouflage, warning, and to attract mates.
· Plants use colours to attract insects.
CLASSROOM IDEAS:
1. Collage pictures from old magazines showing examples of
colours in nature.
2. Record descriptions of a pleasant day, stormy
day
Choose objects that are of similar colour and arrange these in order from the
lightest to darkest
