Education for, in and about the Frontenac Arch Biosphere

PROGRAM OUTLINE (2 hours)
Through a variety of fun hands-on activities, students use their senses to discover the wonder and beauty of the natural world.

INTRODUCTION: Puppet show - 1/2 hour
Students will meet some friendly puppet characters who share their outdoor experiences with the five senses.

DISCOVERY HIKE AND SENSORY ACTIVITIES- 1 1/2 hours

1. MEET A TREE (Touch)
Using a “golden rope” students are lead on a short blindfolded walk to a magical forest. Once at the trees, students are divided into pairs. The sighted partner leads the blindfolded partner to a tree. The blindfolded student must get to know this tree through touch and smell. This student is then lead away from the tree and the blindfold is removed. They must now find their tree. The partners then switch roles.

2. TOUCH CARTONS (Touch)
Groups of two to four students are given an egg carton. Underneath the egg carton are two opposite “touches”, i.e, soft-hard, smooth-rough. Students must find natural things to fill the appropriate categories of their boxes. When finished, students switch their egg cartons with another group and try to guess the opposite touches.

3. FOREST DETECTIVE (Sight)
Using magnifying lenses, students are given the opportunity to explore the natural environment, i.e. old stumps, insects, bark etc. Students will describe their discoveries during a follow-up.

4. CAMOUFLAGE TRAIL (Sight)
Students walk along a trail and try to spot animals (wooden and rubber) hidden along the trail.

5. NATURE'S ORCHESTRA (Sound)
StudenTs close their eyes. Using their fingers to keep track, children are asked to remember all the natural and human-made sounds they hear.

6. SCRATCH AND SNIFF (Smell)
Using tiny sponges and magical sniff potion, students explore the many scents of nature.
