PROGRAM OUTLINE (2 HOURS)
The emphasis in this program is upon map reading skills. Students will be taken
through a progression which includes memory, line, and score orienteering.
INTRODUCTION (Inside)
Staff will introduce the concept of "Orienteering" with terms such
as legend, landmarks, cardinal directions. Using a large map of the inside
of the Activity Centre, students will look for controls hidden inside the centre.
Each control has a letter which the students copy. When all twelve controls
have
been found, students unscramble a secret message.
OUTSIDE:
LINE ORIENTEERING:
In this activity, students follow a path outlined on a map. As they follow the
path, they look for small orange and white controls. They must mark the location
of these controls on their maps. Students must keep the map oriented at all times
in order to find the controls.
SCORE ORIENTEERING:
Students are given a map of the surrounding conservation area. Twenty numbers
are shown on the map. Students must find the controls indicated by the numbers.
When they find a control, they record a symbol (painted on the metal control)
onto a piece of paper. The challenge is to find all the controls and record them
with the correct number. E.g. Control #5 is +
Students work with a partner.
